A Recap of My NaNoReadMo Experience

My reading stats for the month of November where I participated in NaNoReadMo

NaNoReadMo is over and it’s time to talk stats!

Unfinished Books

Let’s just rip the band-aid off right away. I didn’t finish all the books.  I said it, phew. It’s not really that bad though, right? My original goal was 15 books and I fell short by 4.  Now that I think of it, 15 was a pretty hefty goal and the fact that I made it to double digits in one month is pretty amazing.

Doctor Zhivago, Fathers and Sons, The Goldfinch. I started Dead Souls but wasn’t able to finish it.

Bonus Book

I wanted to end the month on a win and I really didn’t want to go a week without finishing a book.  So I decided to pick up Rupi Kaur’s collection of poetry, Milk and Honey. I’ve had it on my shelf for almost a month and I keep taking peeks at it and then putting it back down for when I can really sit and enjoy it.

It’s a quick read but so powerful. Almost every time I finished a poem, I would immediately send a picture of it to one of my friends.  So many of the poems reminded me of something I’d been trying to convey to someone, or was just the perfect encapsulation of the person. After reading this collection of poems, I realized I really miss reading poetry.  So I want to devote some more time to reading it!

Overall I am really pleased with my reading this month.  I finished 12 books, 11 from the TBR pile and 1 bonus book. I admit, near the end I did get a little burnt out by reading and was really craving some mindless tv watching.  It doesn’t help that I probably saved the “heaviest” books for last.  These books are still in my TBR pile, and I’m going to try to get a few read next month.

I love the reading tracking I did in my Bullet Journal™.  It was fun to see how many sessions I read each book in and the average reading speed for each book, as well as the month in general.  I liked the full page spread for each book. Even though there was enough room to record character names and my favorite lines, it was still a struggle to include all the details I wanted for the books.  I definitely had to leave some stuff out that I wanted to include due to lack of space.

That led me to really consider how I want to be tracking my reading in the future. I’m going to be switching to a different journal to log my reading starting in 2017 and I can’t wait to share that with you!

Reading Tracking in my Bullet Journal

An example of how I tracked my reading in my Bullet Journal this month.

1) Finish books from previous month’s TBR that I didn’t get around to starting.  I still have 3 books remaining from this list.

2) Completing my Goodreads 2016 goal of 80 books in a year-I’m currently behind by quite a few! I’m up to 65 books out of 80! It’s not looking so great.

3) Create a backlog of finished books ready to review here! Plenty of books to write reviews for, I just need to figure out how I want to do that.

4) Check off some books on my Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge List Checked 2 books of this list in the month of November.  Too many left to count.

What’s Next

Next month is going to be busy for everyone, including me!  I’m hoping to make it close to my 80 book Goodreads Goal.  So far I have 65 books read which means I’ll need to read 15 books, so I think I’ll have to choose some shorter books.  I’m craving fast fun reads right now which is great because that’s exactly what I need.  It would be really fantastic if those books came from my bookshelves and not the bookstore, my bank account would really appreciate that.  I’ll be sure to keep you posted on my December reading plans.

NaNoReadMo Verdict

I’m so happy with my decision to switch from NaNoWriMo to NaNoReadMo.  I was hoping to get back into reading like a maniac and I think I succeeded.  I want to NaNoReadMo every month! Okay, maybe every OTHER month!  How did NaNoReadMo go for you? What books did you read this month?
