Camp NaNo Week 3 Diary – It’s All Downhill From Here

Camp NaNo Week 3 Diary

Camp NaNo Week 3 Diary

I’m excited to share my Camp NaNo Week 3 Diary with you!  This week was less productive because of the holiday weekend.  I knew that going in and worked hard the first two weeks to build extra padding.  I appreciate my foresight.

This week pushed me.  I had to think far outside of my comfort zone and put myself into the minds of my characters.  It was fun but I found myself staring at the blinking cursor for a long time.

April 14th – Word Count – 33,368

We were traveling this morning for the weekend holiday and so I decided to do some writing in the car.  Luckily for me, I don’t get car sick!  I didn’t think about how I would write with a dog in my lap though.  I’m really surprised at how much writing I could get done in the car.  I worked on a scene I had previously started and was able to finish it up and log 2,002 words.

April 15 – Word Count -35,002

Today we are at my aunt and uncle’s house and after some Easter festivities, we had some down time.  The kids played ping pong and I got some writing done.  I’m realizing that more than just getting a story written in 30 days, Camp NaNo is teaching me how to write on the fly.  I knew I wouldn’t have a lot of time to write but I did want to spend a little bit of time today working.  The sprints have taught me that even a ten minute period is enough time to make some progress. I’m growing as a writer, moving outside of my comfort zone and most importantly putting words down on paper, (or in a file…whatever).  Total words written today -1,634.

April 16 – Word Count 36,253

We returned home today from our weekend away and I didn’t do any writing in the car because the dog was in my lap the whole time.  When we got home, it was a mad dash of putting things away and starting laundry.  I get so exhausted when we’re away that I spent a good hour on the couch watching TV before I started writing.  I was hoping to get to 2k today but I could only manage 1,251 words.  It’s okay.  I plan to refocus this week and get some work done!

April 17 – Word Count – 38,655

This week is Spring Break for my kids which makes quiet writing time a little harder to come by. I shut myself up in my room while the littlest one napped (or was supposed to be napping!) and got to work.  It was much slower going today than it has been and writing 2,402 words took almost 2.5 hours.  The good news is, I can relax after the kids go to bed and not worry about any more writing.

The scene I worked on today was very emotionally engaging and now I feel a bit drained.  Things are starting to heat up for my characters, so there’s a lot more “bad” to come I’m afraid.

April 18 – Word Count – 40,890

My plan to wake up early and write has failed miserably so far.  I’ve been so drained I haven’t been able to leave the comfort of my bed to write.  Today’s writing took place in my car waiting for my son’s dentist appointment, and at my desk where I tried to focus but was continuously distracted.  (Mostly by my own brain!). I’m so excited that I made it to 40K words!!  This is a huge milestone! I’m more than halfway through and am quickly approaching the finish line! 2,235 words today!

April 19 – Word Count – 42,714

The scene I planned to write today was really awkward.  It was something I have no experience in and so I was pretty much winging it the whole time.  I kept getting frustrated when I came to something I couldn’t work out because I didn’t know how to.  That meant I took a lot of breaks to think about things, and then got back to writing.  It wasn’t the first time this has happened but it was probably the most frustrating time.  I’m happy with the 1,824 words I managed to eek out today.  I really thought I would only get to 500 words.

April 20 – Word Count – 45,012

Writing today was really interesting.  Today was the first day that I could see the finish line very clearly.  I can see how much I have left and what I need to do to get there.  The story has changed from when I first planned it out but I’m okay with that.  It’s better than what I had planned.  I did some writing at tennis practice and then when my kids were sleeping or reading.  I’m getting better at writing with distractions around.  It’s still not ideal, but with three kids, I need to learn to adapt.  Today’s word count – 2,298

Monthly Stats –

Camp NaNo Week 3 Diary

My stats are off because this picture should have been taken yesterday.  These stats assume a 0-word count entry for today.  I wanted to get this post up so I didn’t wait for today’s writing session.

As of yesterday, I am 20K away from my goal and the official word count goal for my project has been locked in at 65K!!  It’s very exciting and I can’t believe that I am so close!  There’s a lot of work still to be done so I don’t want to start celebrating yet.  There are 10 more writing days in this month and I better get to work.

How close are you to your goals this month?

Check out Week 1 and Week 2.
