Camp NaNoWriMo Diary Week 4

I am a Camp NaNoWriMo 2017 Winner!

Its official and I have the certificate to prove it!  I’m so proud of this thing! I can’t wait to print it out and hang it on my wall! I’m a Camp NaNoWriMo 2017 Winner!! Take a look at how this last week of writing went or just skip to the final statistics at the bottom!

Camp NaNoWriMo 2017 Winner!

April 21 – Word Count – 47,015

My writing session today went pretty well.  I had a scene in mind that I wanted to write and I sat down and wrote it.  It was pretty simple.  I love when writing sessions go that way.  I’m not sure tomorrow’s session is going to be as easy but tomorrow is another day.  I’m happy with the 2,003 words I wrote today.

April 22 – Word Count – 50,022

Despite having a house full of noisy kids, a bad headache, and lack of motivation to write today, I did manage to make HUGE progress.  I hit 50K words today!!  My word count goal is 65K not the suggested 50K so I’m not done yet.  I was going to finish up when I hit 2,000 words but I wasn’t that far away from 50K so I pushed myself to keep going.  I grabbed some headphones to block out the noise, (I didn’t actually listen to anything) and managed to sit and focus for a couple hours.  It’s a great feeling to be so close!

April 23 – Word Count- 50,072

Its started.  That feeling of if I don’t finish this, I don’t have to do any more work on it.  I’m so close to being done and I know that I’m nervous about what finishing it will mean.  I’m starting to think ahead to after the writing is done, but I need to remember that I’m not done yet.  I stopped in the middle of scene yesterday and I focused on finishing it today.  It helped me think of the next thing that needs to happen and the thing after that.  It’s starting to come full circle.

April 24 – Word Count – 54,083

I got a late start writing today because I was talking books with a friend (so fun!).  However, I did manage to write 700 words no problem, but then my kids came home from school and I got a little distracted.  When dinner came around, I took a break and then finished writing the rest of my word count for the day.

The scene I worked on today was a really pivotal scene and I was worried about screwing it up.  Whatever the scene ends up being I can always revise it.  It’s important for me to put that kind of thinking aside.  Stopping myself before I even start is not a habit I want to cultivate!  2,008 words today!

April 25 – Word Count – 56,181

My friend and I did an hour of focus this morning after I dropped my youngest off at pre-school.  I was able to write almost 900 words and argue with the insurance company.  I worked for about two hours total and ended up making my word count goal for the day before noon!  That’s incredible for me.  I am looking forward to an hour this afternoon of just reading and relaxing.  Camp NaNoWriMo is pretty taxing on my brain, no surprise there, and I find I need time to unwind from my story so that I don’t get burnt out.  2,098 words this morning!

April 26 – Word Count- 58,198

I had absolutely zero motivation to write today.  The only reason I sat down to write was because of my #writechain writing streak.  I’ve worked really hard on that writing streak and I didn’t want to break it.  So I sat down to write with the goal of hitting 1,400 words but I ended up really getting into my scene and writing to the word count goal.  Today’s total was 2,017 words.  I don’t know if I’m going to be able to wrap up the story in the next 7k words!

April 27 – Word Count – 60,018

60K!!  Less than 5,000 words away from my goal for the month.  Still not sure I can tie everything together in 5,000 words but I’m really going to try.  I’m so close to wrapping the story up.  I need to write a few more pretty big scenes but I already know how it’s going to end. I know what’s going to happen in the closing scene, and that’s a relief.  It will still count as a win if I get to 65k but I want to hit the real goal which is to write a complete story.  Today’s word count is 1,816.

April 28 – Word Count- 61,330

This was probably my worst writing day all month.  My word count for the day was 1,312, which was no where near where I wanted to be today.  I have so much left to write, I really need to buckle down tomorrow and get it done.  I was constantly distracted today, I took a really long break to do some art and then struggled to finish writing.  I’m definitely feeling the effects of writing more than 2k words a day.  I will adjust my writing goals next month based on what I’ve learned about myself.  This challenge has helped me understand what works best for me as a writer (<—squee!).

April 29 – Word Count- 65,102

I did it!! I’m a Camp NaNoWriMo 2017 Winner!  I reached my word count goal for the month and validated! There are still some scenes that need work but everything major is written and done!  It feels amazing to hit the word count goal, and to have a completed story.  This is probably the most complete idea I’ve ever had for a story and I’m sure it’s just going to get better in revision. I still have a lot of work to do, I’m not delusional haha.  It’s not ready for an audience yet, but I feel confident I can pull it off.  Today I took the time to focus and complete the story.  I finished the day with 3,772 words!

April 30 – The End

Final Stats

Camp NaNoWriMo ends today, and it feels so amazing to have completed my goal.  When I think back on the month, I realize that I completely underestimated how much brain power and energy it would take to write 2,200 words every day.  My writing ritual up until this month had been to write for an hour each day and I usually came away with 1200-1500 words.  Those extra 800-1000 words are the hard ones to write!  Or at least they were for me.

I’m so grateful for:

  • the NaNoWriMoSprints, which taught me that you can accomplish a lot in 10 minutes.
  • this daily diary, which let me reflect on my writing each day.
  • the support I received from the writing community on Twitter and Instagram.
  • my friends and family who encouraged me to keep going

What an amazing month!!  How was your Camp NaNoWriMo experience?
